Development of the typeface for University of Ljubljana started with the question: How to present the voice of the oldest and largest higher education institution of Slovenia?
UNIVERSITY OF LJUBLJANA
Historically, the territory of Slovenia has formed part of many states: the Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, the Habsburg Monarchy, the Republic of Venice, the Illyrian Provinces, Austro-Hungarian Empire and Yugoslavia.
In order to convey a historic protagonism of the previous century, we suggested that design evoke qualities such as dignity, belonging, heritage and creativity. Univerza Sans is a hybrid between geometric and humanistic sans typefaces interwoven by the Slovenian art heritage. It is developed for multifunctional use of university identity system, formal communication, student information, way-finding, academic and scientific articles. It speaks Central European languages, feels official but looks attractive and recognisable. The type family combines 4 weights, each of them is represented with the true italics and custom symbols.

As it achieved independence from the empire - the founding of the university became possible on December 3th, 1919.
“KULTURA mehkosty”
The established university offered the public educations and provided the sense of independency, belonging, solidarity and equal opportunities → these are the values we based our design on.

The purpose of the research was to find very limited, yet unique letter forms presenting Slovenian typography. We have never had any foundries so the majority of the movable type was brought from Austria and Italy. However, there were local artists and architect that explore lettering and calligraphy.
